This car frequently parks at a fire hydrant AND on the wrong side of the street during alternate side parking regulations, preventing adequate street cleaning. The permit appears to be phony based on the valid placard samples displayed on this site. This is in Ridgewood, Queens, and the placard is for 88th Precinct in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Just once again a placard holder feels it his his or her right to just break the law "just a little". It is Ok since I saw two NYPD cars go by the car and see the placard and just move on, so maybe it is OK? It's funny, since I am suprised they did not ticket the white car behind. I think that car might just be 15 feet but NYPD has ticketed people there before, but it was raining tonight so maybe they cut both of them a break.

New York Daily News: Mayor to pols: Find your own parking!

News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Thu, Aug 14 2008

BY ERIN EINHORN and FRANK LOMBARDI
DAILY NEWS CITY HALL BUREAU

Mayor Bloomberg ended a sweet parking perk for a handful of City Council members after the Daily News exposed the practice Wednesday.

Bloomberg ordered the Department of Transportation to tear down special signs reserving parking for four Council members in front of their district offices - signs he called "inappropriate."

"We will just remove those signs from those four spaces," the mayor said.

The News revealed Wednesday that the Council members had a deal most New Yorkers would covet: reserved parking spots set aside for them and their staffers from 7 a.m to 7p.m. weekdays.

Two of the reserved areas were set aside before Council members Helen Foster (D-Bronx) and David Yassky (D-Brooklyn) took office in 2002. But Council members Al Vann (D-Brooklyn) and Helen Sears (D-Queens) requested their spaces during Bloomberg's tenure.

Bloomberg has made a point of slashing parking privileges for city employees, including chopping the number of parking placards given to city workers and elected officials. About 26,000 parking placards have been eliminated this year, out of 144,000 previously issued, according to mayoral spokesman Jason Post.

He said an additional 12,600 placards, largely belonging to teachers and education officials, will be nixed when they come up for renewal in September.

New York Daily News: Grief for Council pols over car perks

News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Wed, Aug 13 2008

It's tough to get a parking spot in Jackson Heights, Queens - unless you are City Councilwoman Helen Sears.

Sears (D-Queens) has a reserved parking spot directly in front of her district office. There's even a Department of Transportation sign warning drivers the spot is for "Council Vehicles" only during peak hours.

While all Council members receive parking placards from the DOT that allow them to park in many restricted areas and even avoid paying the meter, four have their own private parking spots on city streets.

Sears, Councilmen Al Vann and David Yassky (both D-Brooklyn) and Councilwoman Helen Foster (D-Bronx) have spots outside their district offices reserved for their own use from 7a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

"The way to solve the problem of scarce parking isn't by doling out perks that just benefit the privileged few," said Wiley Norvell of Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group that has issued numerous studies on parking in the city. "We need smart policies that benefit everyone. You don't solve the problem by giving three people free parking and exacerbating the problem for everybody else."

New York Sun: Principals Struggling To Pare Parking Perks for Employees

News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Thu, Aug 07 2008

Public school principals across the city are returning from summer vacation to learn that they have been enlisted among the ranks of city officials being asked to curb their car use in order to help the environment — and many are not pleased.

In the past, every staff member at a school was eligible for a free parking permit that gave its user free rein to park in a school's lot or on a nearby street. Now, schools are being given just a set number of permits, and every principal is left with the task of divvying them out.

I frequently see cars parked on 158th Street and River Ave. (near Yankee Stadium) blocking the fire hydrant. Cars park on the sidewalk as well. The police say that this is for “game day” but it’s a safety hazard to block a hydrant, and it kills the trees and ruins the sidewalk when cars park there. (The sidewalk is cracked and falling apart due to this practice.) The people who run the parking garage move and park these cars on the sidewalk as if the sidewalk was an extension of the private garage. I don’t know if they are charging people for these “parking spaces,” but since uniformed garage valets are moving the cars and parking them on the sidewalk and street it’s not too far fetched.

A valet from the parking garage has pulled a car in on the the sidewalk next to a fire hydrant. The door is opening as he gets out of the car. Now the hydrant is blocked on both sides! The silver car on the right is the private car of a cop. The car on the left is just a regular private car. These cars remained in these spots for hours.

I wish that people would respect the sidewalks in my neighborhood. I want to feel safe, and not have the sidewalk and fire hydrant blocked by cars. I spoke in a very calm and friendly manner to the garage owner, but he started yelling at me. He called over a police officer who yelled at me too. The police officer said that the cars were parked on the sidewalk and in front of fire hydrant “To prevent a truck bomb from blowing up the stadium! Do you want that to happen?!” (I said “No.”) I can understand blocking the street for this reason and I’m glad that the police are working to keep people safe. However, I do not understand how parking cars on the sidewalk and next to a fire hydrant makes anyone any safer. Do you? I was careful never to raise my voice and to be respectful to the police officer and to the garage owner. (As always!) Honestly, I didn’t expect such a wild reaction just for taking a few photos.

"We feel as a community that the placard system has been abused. It's our statement to the administration that we need to do our share to reign that process in," Board 2 Chairman Brad Hoylman said Friday.

Fire Hydrant Parking by NYPD...AGAIN

42-02 25th Avenue, Queens. Observed by gh8889 on Thu, Jul 17 2008

Main_8741 Ribbon_hazard

This guy parks in front of not 1 but 2 fire hydrants which are very close together with his NYPD parking placard. He parks here 3-5 times per week for 12 hours minimum. There have been several complaints by people in my neighborhood, but to not avail. My last call to 311 was on the same day I took this picture. At that point he had been there for 3 days (he still has not moved, which makes it 6 days). When I called back for a status report, I was told "Police checked compliant, no violation found". Which is funny because when I pulled in for less than 5 min to unload a few cases of water (with my flashers on and car running), I came back to a traffic cop giving me a ticket. For the past 20 years that I have lived there, you were not allowed to park in between the fire hydrants (if you park between the 2, it gives you approx. 3ft to either hydrant). This guy thinks this is his personal driveway, he does not even attempt to look for parking while every one else either pays for a garage or spends the time finding a valid spot. Hopefully, my building will not need the assistance of the fire department any time soon.

New York Post: KABBALAH PARKING PARADISE

News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Sun, Jul 20 2008

Main_8721 Ribbon_news

By REUVEN BLAU and KATHIANNE BONIELLO

July 20, 2008 --

Mayor Bloomberg's crackdown on city-issued parking permits doesn't apply to the celebrity-studded Midtown Kabbalah Centre - even as police, firefighters and teachers are having their parking passes yanked.

The spiritual home of Madonna, Alex Rodriguez and other celebrities has 10 permits that allow for parking in the loading zone in front of the East 48th Street building.

Last year, the city issued 5,369 permits to 883 "social-service organizations," such as Access-a-Ride, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, volunteer ambulance services - and the Kabbalah Centre.

There are about 400 permits given annually to clergy and houses of worship, but religious groups usually get just one or two such passes - not 10. So far, the city has no plans to cut the number of placards given to private groups as prescribed by city law, a City Hall spokesman said.

But with the city slashing the number of placards given to its workers, it's time to take a hard look at other groups who get the benefit, said Wiley Norvell of Transportation Alternatives, an advocacy group critical of placard abuse.

Salsa legend Willie Colon is singing a happy tune these days since he got to keep his official parking placard while scores of others were yanked this year in City Hall's crackdown, The Post has learned.

Mayoral aides could offer only a half-hearted defense of the special privilege that Colon has been receiving since 2006, noting that he serves on the city's Latin Media and Entertainment Commission, which meets only four times a year.

Colon also happens to have been a high-profile backer of Mayor Bloomberg in the 2005 mayoral race, when Democrat Fernando Ferrer appeared to be a formidable voter-getter, especially with Hispanics.

Aside from Colon, though, the mayor's placard-cutters were unsparing.

New York Times: In Politics and Parking, Winners Get the Spoils

News, New York. Observed by lawandorder on Sat, Jul 19 2008

Politics and parking are two of New York City’s most competitive sports — and never more cutthroat than when played in combination. This spring, for instance, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced that he had slashed the number of parking placards doled out by the city to law enforcement agencies and other city departments.

Now, after a request by news organizations, some of the winners and losers of the great city parking sweepstakes are beginning to emerge. The results are somewhat puzzling, though not entirely unexpected. In general, the State Assembly, the State Senate and the city’s marshals office (population 44) did rather well in holding onto their permits. The chairmen and district managers of the city’s community boards did not.
